After completing his 2017 residency at Acme Studios in London, sponsored by Khazanah Nasional, Ajim Juxta returned to Malaysia and embarked on several exhibitions aimed at comprehending and internalizing his experiences. 'TUGU|UGUT' showcases a body of work that encapsulates his creative journey, personal realms, and evolving thoughts. Originally exhibited at Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM), Kuala Lumpur in November 2018, the show now graces Hin Bus Depot in Penang. For this Penang presentation, Ajim collaborates with local artists to create new works that respond to the unique space of Hin Bus Depot, which bears witness to the gentle decay of time. The exhibition delves into the idea of tugu/ugut, exploring how society is ensnared by the tenets of capitalism and materialism, from tangible elements like money, materials, and structures to intangible factors like acceptance, recognition, and egos, all of which shape our daily decisions and interactions. As the curator, Sharmin Parameswaran, notes, 'We are trapped by where we have come to. Following perceived monuments that continue to threaten us.
