MARCH 9 - APRIL 7, 2019 Exhibition Opening: March 9, 6pm - 9pm
About the Exhibition Following his 2017 residency at Acme Studios in London, made possible by Khazanah Nasional, Ajim Juxta returned to Malaysia and started working on several exhibitions in a process to understand and internalise his experience. TUGU|UGUT presents a body of works which represent the accumulation of his creative journey, personal domains, and progressing thoughts.
TUGU|UGUT at Hin Bus Depot, follows it's showing at Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM), Kuala Lumpur in November 2018. For the showing in Penang, Ajim has created and collaborated with other (Penang based) artists on new works, once again in response to the exhibition's current space of Hin Bus Depot; a soft decay through time. Excerpt from Curator's Note:He (Ajim) wrote the words tugu/ugut, and started to talk about how we; people, and society, are enclosed, entrapped even, in the principles and ethics of capitalism and materiality. The tangibles of money, materials, buildings, and the intangibles of acceptance, recognition and egos, which guide our daily choices and the acceptance of those around us. ‘We are trapped by where we have come to. Following perceived monuments that continue to threaten us’. - Sharmin Parameswaran (Collaborator/Curator, 2018)
