Little Stars is an exhibition featuring artworks by child refugees from a small kindergarten located in a nondescript shop lot in Butterworth, called Good Start Learning Centre. The school is refugee-run, with most of the children coming from Myanmar, their families having fled some of the most severe persecution in their country of origin. In Malaysia too, hopes for a better life have yet to materialise. Job prospects are low and discrimination abound. Despite this, the teachers still teach with passion and the children still learn with gusto, sing songs, and enjoy their opportunities, which is testament enough to the resilience of our enduring human spirit. This is what we aim to highlight through the exhibition of the products of their joys.
But not only that, we aim to raise awareness of the larger refugee community in Penang and throughout Malaysia so that the quality of life for these children and their families can be improved. In fact, refugee empowerment has been and remains our main guiding ideal in the making of this exhibition. With a petition to the Malaysian government that we will put up throughout the event, we also advocate for the granting of labour rights for all refugees in the country, per Promise 59 of the Pakatan Harapan Manifesto.
It is our greatest hope that you can be there to support us in this great cause!
