What is a flea market to you? A place to browse for antiques, castaways, junk?
One can sometimes come across something valuable; more often than not, one walks away with a sense of ineffable sadness....for goods and things that are on the edge of outliving their usefulness.
Yet there can be joy walking amongst a busy flea market-the throng of people, the buzz of bargaining, the looks of appraisal.
Our flea markets in Malaysia are more like the Thieves market, for found things, for stolen things.
Old pictures, recording, books, jewelry, glass, furniture, parts of furniture, tools and so on are to be had....every community the world over has their version, their efforts at recycling, to wring every ounce of usefulness out of an object before it is discarded.
'Found Things...' is Howard Tan's very first solo exhibition. He is using photography with experimentally visual methods to recreate unique flea market scenes for his audience.
Also featured are some of his finds over the years of browsing through the flea markets throughout the country.
