About Artist Tan Lay Heong is a Penang-based artist who graduated in Bachelor of Fine Arts from the National Taiwan University of Arts in 2011.
Her practice focuses primarily on installation art, painting and shadow play performance. She has been actively involved in community projects and youth art camps, in which she conducts upcycling workshops to spread the idea of upcycling through artmaking in our daily life. She sometimes works as a stage designer.
Currently, she focuses on creating shadow puppet show and installation art through upcycling waste materials. She believes that everything on the earth is unique and deserves a chance to be rebirthed into something meaningful.
Artist statement Art making process and its production can be extremely wasteful, most pieces are for one-time-use and get thrown away immediately after being consumed. In my current practice, I try to source materials solely from reusable waste. Many of the waste produced by us are from one-time-use material such as product packaging, which gets disposed of right away without any second thought.
My artworks are intended to prompt further thoughts about our roles and responsibilities as cohabitants of this planet. As we continue to progress as a more intelligent species, we neglect and compromise the well-being of other creatures, as many are at the brink of becoming extinct. Our action can set off consequences that hurt the environment until it is beyond repair.
Creating art from waste is not an easy feat. However, I hope my way of practice can help to trigger further thinking and productive discussions about our role as temporary cohabitants on earth.
